India is commemorating its 73rd Republic Day this 26th January. While this year’s celebrations will also be more subdued in an effort to emphasise social distancing and safety amid the pandemic, this public holiday gives everyone a chance to visit historical sites in the country for patriotic feelings. Here are 5 places in India where we can recall India’s struggle for freedom against the British Occupation and the glorious day when the Indian Constitution came into effect.
1. India Gate In Delhi
India Gate was built in honour of 82,000 martyred Indian army soldiers, and its walls get lit in tricolour on important days. Every year on Republic Day, a spectacular parade begins from India Gate. Together, the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force display their strength through arsenal, warheads, Jets, Military vehicles, latest tanks and technologies, definitely a proud moment for every Indian. An array of colourful and vibrant floats or tableaus from each of the 29 states and the seven Union Territories of the country demonstrate the true ethos of the country. While watching this magnificent procession on television is spectacular, it is a truly inspiring experience to see it live in Delhi. It will give you goosebumps and fill your soul with patriotic feelings.

2. Cellular Jail In Andaman Islands
The Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, known during the British regime as ‘Kala Paani’, was once where Indian freedom fighters Yogendra Shukla, Batukeshwar Dutt and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar were once imprisoned. If you walk around this memorial, you will recall many sons of the soil who died here shouting Inquilab Zindabad. Those daring souls were captives but expressed unrelenting fire of Inqalab within them. They chose to die rather than bowing down to oppression and tyranny. The massive structure still echoes of the strength and the violence that took place at that time. Pain and screams of freedom emanate from all the corners which remind of the atrocity that was inflicted with a sheer display of barbarity by the Brit forces. However, the place is now turned to a monument where every evening a light and sound show is put on in honour of the freedom fighters who spent their last days in prison here.

3. Wagah Border In Punjab
Wagah Border is located near Amritsar in Punjab and Lahore in Pakistan. It is a place Indians must visit at least once in their lifetime. This border is known for its flag-lowering ceremony that has happened every day ever since 1959. The ceremony is an enchanting display of rivalry and harmony between the two nations, performed by BSF and Pakistan Rangers. Standing here in reverence, singing the national anthem in unison, will truly fill your hearts with pride for our beloved country.
4. Netaji Bhawan In West Bengal
Netaji Bhawan is a memorial to commemorate the Indian freedom fighter, Subhas Chandra Bose. The memorial contains photos of his life, as well as his getaway car and staircase from his escape. There is also a museum, library, and archives displaying his bravery and patriotism during India’s freedom struggle. If you visit here during Republic Day, you will feel admiration and gratitude for this renowned freedom fighter. He was so invested in the future of India and his countrymen that he even, with extreme caution and by changing his identity multiple times, reached Nazi Germany to strike a partnership with the Nazis to rid India of the British rule. He even recruited 3000 Indian prisoners of war to a group called the Indian Legion who would then infiltrate the USSR and make their way to India and drive the Britishers out of the country. The plan didn’t work out though due to a myriad of reasons, but Netaji is a highly revered figure in Indian history and this memorial is validating this.
